20 cm / 25 kg Book cradle

A book cradle is a device that compensates for the binding or the thickness of a book.

This option makes it possible to obtain optimal digitization quality while meeting all standards for document conservation.

The book cradle can:

  • stabilize both sides of the open document. It is, in fact, essential that both pages of the document be approximately at the same height to digitize under good conditions.
  • assist the operator in bringing the document between the two focal planes where document legibility is clear (depth of field). This is actually compensation for the height of the document.
  • partially open the document (120° for example) if the fragility of the binding does not allow it to be fully opened.

The support on which the book is placed takes the form of a scale consisting of two plates that balance themselves by the weight of the book. The gap between the two plates is adjustable based on the format of the book.

As shown in the images below, the book cradle allows the document to be digitized in a 120° or 180° position.

180° position

For greater flexibility, the operator can also use a locking system to lock the balancing system in any position.

Out of a concern for the preservation of the originals, our book cradles do not contain any hydraulic systems and therefore do not have any associated risk of pressure or liquid leaks that could damage the document.
